Google Maps For iOS Hit Over 10 Million Downloads In Less Than 48 Hours After Release

Google Maps For iOS Hit Over 10 Million Downloads In Less Than 48 Hours After Releas!

The Maps scene on iOS 6 has finally improved, thanks to the newly releasedGoogle Maps for iOS. The search engine company had promised that they would bring an official Google Maps app to iOS after Apple decided to ditch Google’s mapping service in iOS 6. Apple payed the price for doing so and had to face a lot of criticism.
Apple finally approved the Google Maps app and made it available in the App Store last week. iOS 6 users were obviously delighted and rushed to download the application. Within hours, Google Maps for iOS became the number 1 free app in the iOS App Store.
Google also confirmed that the iOS version is actually better than the Android version.
The iOS Google Maps app provides Transit information and Street View, two things that Apple’s Map app doesn’t do. Also, the mapping service is generally much more reliable. Google’s Jeff Huber, the Senior Vice President of Commerce & Local, released official download numbers for the Maps app recently.

As it turns out, the Google Maps app for iOS saw over 10 Million downloads in less than 48 hours after it was released on to the App Store. Jeff Huber published this on hisGoogle+ page:
We’re excited for the positive reception of Google Maps for iPhone around the world. Congratulations to the Maps Team on the recognition for the passion and hard work they poured into it, for this release and over the last 7+ years.
I’m sure the numbers are only going to increase, as 10 Million isn’t really a lot of iOS devices when you think about it. Apple’s Maps app works great in countries like the United States, U.K etc, but in other places it still full of faults. If you’re on a jailbroken iPhone, you can try the MapsOpener tweak and make Google Maps the stock app. Also, check out this simple trick to get Siri to provide directions using Google Maps.
Have you downloaded the new Google Maps for iOS? Or are you still using Apple Maps?
